The Beat List 2022

This will be the very last post on the XPG GRIT blog this year. It has been an epic year filled with great blog posts. A special shout out to DJMMT, who has contributed more posts than any other community members this year. We hope to see this change in 2023, as we have many other active members in the XPG GRIT community that we would love to see write blog posts of their own. Definitely get in touch with us if you’d like to contribute a post in 2023.

We couldn’t think of a more meaningful way to close out the year than a recounting of all the great games we played in 2023. By far, the most active gamer in the XPG team is our very own XPG GRIT manager, XPG Terrence. When he’s not managing the giveaways and blog content, he’s usually gaming. He managed to beat more than 60 games this year. Here’s the full list:

We asked him 4 simple questions about the games he played in 2023. Check out the answers below.

1.What was your favorite game you played in 2022?

It's really hard to choose just one. I played a lot of amazing games this year. I was really impressed by Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, and Bayonetta 3 among others. But I think the game that impressed me the most was Bayonetta 3. It surprised me in so many ways. The gameplay was extremely diverse compared to the previous two games.

2. What was your favorite indie game you played in 2022?

I think I'm going to have to go with Inscryption. Honestly, that game is 4 separate games in one. But really it's the first section of the game that's great. You could literally just play that part of the game and stop. It's one of the best single player card battle games I've ever played. But I'd also give an honorable mention to The Big Con and the entire Banner Saga Trilogy.

3.What was your least favorite game you played in 2022?

I played a number of forgettable games this year, but the game that I actually disliked playing by the end of it was Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. That's probably a surprising answer for a lot of people. I've played every FromSoftware Soulslike game, except Elden Ring, plus many from other companies, and that one was just not fun for me. It was well made, and I really appreciated that the studio finally made a game with an actual plot. But the gameplay really was prohibitively difficult, even compared to other FromSoftware games. I was extremely happy to have been able to beat it with no mods or cheats of any kind, but I would be lying if I said I enjoyed playing it after probably the first half of the game. And ironically it was my most played PlayStation game this year at 99 hours. But that's not because I replayed it. It took me that long just to beat a single playthrough.

4.What game are you most looking forward to playing in 2023?

I got a PS5 for Christmas, but haven't gotten to play anything on it yet. The first games I'll be playing are God of War Ragnarok and Horizon Forbidden West. I'm really excited to play both of those. But for games releasing in 2023, I'm most excited for Wild Hearts. I love the genre and I'm excited to see Koei Tecmo's take on it. I'm also really looking forward to Forspoken, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and of course The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Now it’s your turn. Let us know in the comments which games you played this year and your answers to the questions above.

Thanks for participating in the XPG GRIT community this year. We look forward to another great year of gaming in 2023. Happy holidays and Happy New Year!
